Day 77 – Thankful for Remembering to Breathe

Day 77 – Thankful for Remembering to Breathe

There was a lot going on today.  Between an early morning drive to EC, working on a couple of projects with tight deadlines, an unexpected twist or two, a long drive home and life it was pretty packed.  Down time was almost non-existent, even the drive time was consumed by thinking through different work related challenges and considering best courses of action.

That being said, today I remembered to breathe.

While driving early this morning I happened to notice the huge orange almost full moon sinking into the bluffs.  It looked huge, was a brilliant orange against the dark blue sky.  I considered stopping but decided to keep driving.  As I went further down the road I kicked myself for not stopping, it was beautiful.  I was glad I at least took time to stop thinking, take it in, enjoy it, and breathe.

About an hour later as I went up a steep hill I happened to glance to my right and saw a deep red sliver of the sun starting to rise out from the distant hills.  Not wanting to regret not stopping I pulled over and got these pictures as the sun came up.  While they don’t capture the true deep red color you can certainly imagine what it looked like floating in the sub-zero air.  In between pictures I paused, took it in, enjoyed it, and took time to breathe.

During the work day there were a couple of times that stress popped its head up and threatened to push buttons and fire off an emotional response.  When that happened I took a second to breathe, clear my head, and then think.  It was amazing the difference in my perspective as I started to work on a solution as opposed to getting frustrated.

On the way home the sun turned a gorgeous deep red and started to set just as I got to the same place I stopped earlier in the day.  I took time to look at it, take it in, and breathe.  Considering stopping, I chose to keep driving rather than stop and almost immediately started to kick myself as it dropped below the horizon.

As I neared the halfway point of the drive I was again driving up a hill and looked to my left.  The huge orange moon had started its ascent in the sea stern sky.  The regret of not stopping for the sunset fresh in my mind I immediately pulled over and got out to take a picture.  In between pictures, in the below freezing air, I took time to take it in, enjoy it, and breathe.  It was even more huge and full and orange than it was in the morning.  Seeing it rise over the farm in the valley was awe inspiring.

So then at home, knowing I have work that needs to be done tonight I had a choice to make.  Watch the boys and Becky at their last night of logrolling and see what all the craziness they were enjoying was all about and know I’d be staying up late to get things done, or stay home, get things done and get a good night of sleep.  I took a deep breath, took it in, and decided to enjoy the moment.

So here I am watching the boys and Becky jump in the pool and run on the log.  It was AWESOME!  The boys were just beaming and having tons of fun rolling solo, rolling against each other, rolling while catching balls, and sprinting across the logs.

While Becky didn’t allow me to take pictures I really wish I would have.  Her smile was absolutely huge, like a kid at Christmas.  While she was rolling not only did way better than she said that she did, but her laugh was so loud, spontaneous and contaigious it reminded me of one of the things I love best about her.  When she is truly laughing there isn’t a person within earshot who can’t help but smile and laugh with her.  It’s a squeal of pure happiness and makes me fall in love with her all over again each time I hear it.  Even as I type this and hear her my smile grows wider.

As I sit here and type and listen to her laughter I just pause…  take it all in…  enjoy it… and breathe…

And that brings me great happiness.

Thanks!!!

Day 76 – Thankful for Watching My Boys Overcome Their Fears

Last year when I would occasionally watch Gavin at swim lessons I would get super tense and nervous.  I could feel my nervousness and unsureness about swimming kick in and I was tightly coiled, ready to spring as soon as his head went under just a little too long.  Instead of enjoying watching him learn a new skill I was foolishly focused on my own fear.  Tonight I jumped in to watch the last night of swim lessons and I was trying to talk myself into staying chill and relaxed.  Becky kept telling me how much better he has continued to get so I figured I’d take a deep breath and not let my shoulders tense up.

The kid that I watched was not the Gavin that I had watched in the past.  I was used to seeing a kid who would only put his head under when he was heavily bribed.  This kid was incredibly confident, voluntarily put his head under water several times to warm up , and was off to the races.  As he blew past where I was sitting he swam right by, putting his face in the water as he did his swim stroke, and, true to Gavin form, started talking as soon as he saw me!  There was zero fear in that kid’s smile, he knew that he knew what he was doing.  It seemed as if he were reading my mind as he smiled at me and then dove head first to retrieve something from the floor of the pool.

I remember him standing petrified on top of the platform, refusing to jump off unless someone held his hand the entire way down.  He’d even get all the way up and then let fear take over and make the descent of shame down the ladder, each rung probably stinging as much as any failed attempt does.  Imagine my surprise this time when he maneuvered his way to the front of the line, sprinted up the ladder, and had to be held back by the life guard until the coast was clear for him.  Once he had the go ahead there was no hesitation, he just jumped right in and came out smiling.  To say I am proud of him would be an understatement.

As I sit in awe watching how he truly conquered fear’s ass I can’t help but be filled with so many thoughts in my head.  I’m enjoying watching him as opposed to being in tense and nervous.  His getting over a fear has helped ease one of my fears.  The way Gavin has defeated a fear is inspiring to me, what fear do I have that I could conquer the way he has?  It has me feeling humbled, here I am, a forty year old, who still has fears that occasionally get the best of me and keep me from achieving all the dreams that I have, yet here’s an eight year old who isn’t making any excuses, he just kicked fear’s ass and found a fun new hobby.  I’m very happy that Becky and I have kept pushing him in swimming, this was a great example of how grit can lead to unexpected awesomeness and happiness.  Did I mention that my sense of pride is through the roof for him?

Gavin, thanks for inspiring your old man to be a better dad and a better man.  I’ll pick out a fear of mine to beat and have you help me through it…  Which I’m pretty sure is about the same way that Dominic inspired me to do the Tough Mudder a few years back.  Hey Best-est Buddy – thanks for reminding me that walls are there to prove how badly we want something.

Thanks!!!

Day 75 – Thankful for Pizza Weekend

As I type this the last of the leftover pizza is being consumed for supper.  The boys and I had a mission and it has been completed…  Pizza for EVERY meal over the course of the weekend.  Challenge accepted and successfully completed.  Eight straight meals consisting of pizza.  And it was more awesome than I imagined!

We started with pizza fries and a chicken bacon ranch pizza at Carbone’s.

Then we had “Second Supper,” a Deep Deep Dish bacon pizza with a cheese and pepperoni stuffed crust from Little Caesars.

Breakfast on Saturday was the leftovers from the two suppers.

Lunch was a bacon and lettuce pizza from Pizza Corral.

Supper was one of the boys’ favorites, a buffet of totally random pizzas from Pizza Doctors.

Sunday breakfast was the remnants of Pizza Corral.

We saved the pizza place that started this idea for last, Rocky Rococo’s.  Gavin got some coupons for free breadsticks from Santa last weekend and that started this crazy idea.  It was Super Slices all around (& a bunch of breadsticks).

The last leftovers were taken down for supper tonight.

While I could honestly care less about the pizza, my personal goal was accomplished…  to make a very memorable weekend for the boys.  Mission accomplished!

Thanks!!!

Day 74 – Thankful for a Day of “And”

Day 74 – Thankful for a Day of “And”

Today has been very fun AND relaxing AND productive AND included creativity AND time with the boys AND time alone AND time with friends AND had memorable phrases AND was filled with child wonderment.  Oh yeah, AND it had pizza…  lots of pizza. 😄

The boys and I had a lot of fun working on a project together for a card game we like to play with each other.  It included working with exacto knives, using creativity and included troubleshooting.  We’re not done yet, but had fun working together to make progress.  Each of us helped each other and we worked together pretty well.

We each had a list of things to get done, and we had time working alone to get things done. It was particularly rewarding for me as I had just enough alone work time to finish the bathroom remodel.  It’s all done!

The boys and I were engaged in conversation the whole time we ate lunch (pizza) and we had a lot of fun fake Christmas shopping at Toys R Us to help out with ideas for each other.

We met up with Steve for supper and had a chance to have some guy time to balance out the boys time.  We all had fun AND pizza!

While driving home we got into a pretty deep conversation about Santa.  Dominic is so awesome with Gavin when we get on the topic that I can’t help but smile.  This conversation was focused on how Santa can eat a couple of bites of cookies in every house.  Then our logical math selves came out and tried to figure out what the competitive eating equivalent would be.

The night ended with back to back Adam Sandler movies – Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy.  They loved them!  We just chilled on the couch and laughed together.

That’s why I’m thankful for a day full of AND today, there was just so much!  Even with Becky being gone it was like she was here as there were random texts timed just right so that it seemed like she was here for part of the day.  So many ANDs, and I’m thankful for all of them.

Thanks!!!

Day 73 – Thankful for Boys’ Weekend

Day 73 – Thankful for Boys’ Weekend

LOL – I should’ve written this earlier when I was more thankful for it. 😂  Now it’s late, they’ve worn me out, and I’m enjoying a quiet moment on the couch.

First things first, I love spending time with Becky.  I enjoy spending time with her and the boys most, but once in a while it’s nice to chill with my boys only.  This weekend she is out with friends and the boys and I are enjoying ourselves.

When we have weekends like this I try to find ways to make the weekends memorable.  I’m pretty sure that this will be one for the ages!  We’re doing the 1st Annual Pizza Tour of La Crosse.  While Becky is gone every meal, and I mean every meal, is going to be pizza.  Yup, steady diet of pizza.  We’ve got five places picked out and some back ups in case we need them.

Tonight we started with Carbone’s…  and ended with a snack pizza from Little Caesar’s.

Poor Dominic wasn’t feeling too hot for a little while, but he umm…  worked something out and felt much better.

In addition to pizza we have a couple of crafty type projects we’re working on.  Thrown in finishing the kits for the boxes we’re making for Cub Scouts and it will be a pretty busy weekend.

One of the most surprisingly satisfying moments tonight was listening to them play the Wii together.  They were just playing, they were on the same team, helping each other out, playing to each other’s strengths, and complimenting each other.  They were laughing, smiling, and just enjoying each other’s company.  That put a huge smile on my face and took a few moments to let it sink in.

I’ll be happy for Becky to be home in a couple of days, but I’ll also enjoy the time I have alone with the boys…  but don’t be surprised if I’m a little tired of pizza!

Thanks!!!

Day 72 – Thankful for My Sense of Smell

My grandma Lamping never smelled too good.  Seriously!  For those of you who never had the opportunity to meet my grandma you probably are thinking that I’m the worst grandson ever, but I know she’s shaking her head, smiling and saying “Michael,”  in the voice that I remember so well.  That was actually one of my favorite long running jokes with her.  I can’t remember how or why, but she couldn’t smell very well, hence the joke.

This past Saturday Becky and I ran past a field that was being bulldozed and the smell of fresh topsoil filled my nose.  I LOVE that smell!  It is amongst my favorite smells in the entire world.  Mix that with the smell of chainsaw cutting through pine and you have one of my favorite smell combination ever.  (the favorite being fresh lava mixed with ocean air)

Over the past week I’ve had several smells that I’ve come across that have really caught my attention or brought back memories.  In some cases the smells brought back memories of other smells that I can remember without actually smelling them.  That’s when I realized just how much I appreciate one of my least appreciated senses.  Today I’m thankful for the following smells and the memories they bring:

  • Stained wood – while I’m a little tired of the smell at the moment it makes me think of being home as a kid.  It seemed like my mom and dad were always in the middle of staining something.
  • Grandparents’ Houses – this one probably sounds a little weird, but it is well intended.  I’m not sure if it was candles, smelly things, or what, but each of their houses had a distinct smell and I can picture it (or smell it) perfectly in memory.  At the Lampings it was a whole house smell and in the Kreilings it was a smell near their dresser.  I’ve tried writing and rewriting the last couple of sentences in a way that didn’t make it sound stinky or weird, but I’m struggling as it wasn’t either, it was a very pleasant smell in both cases.
  • Cleaning Guns – I can’t imagine that I smelled this very often in my life, but the smell of the oil used stills is cataloged in my head and brings back happy memories.  Weird how the memory works, isn’t it?
  • Rain and Fall – Both of these smells bring me happiness every time I breathe them in.
  • Lava and Ocean Air – Ahh…  Pure bliss…  I still swear that the smell of lava is truly unique and unlike any other smell I’ve encountered.
  • Fresh Lumber – Another reminder of being home as a kid.  It brings back lingering memories of being home and doing wood work.

While there are many times in which I wish I didn’t smell too good either (usually when I am with my boys in a car or other enclosed spaces), I’m very happy to have a working sniffer.  It may be the least appreciated sense that I have, but when I take time to think about it there is much happiness and many memories brought on by it.  For that I am thankful.

Thanks!!!

Day 71 – Thankful for a Little Quiet Time at Night

Over the past week or so it seems I’ve been the last man standing in the Kreiling house.  Not gonna lie, it’s pretty peaceful.  The chill time gives me a chance to relax, take in the day, and listen to some great music.

Over the past few nights there’ve been a few songs that seem to keep making it back into the rotation.

  • Hurt by Johnny Cash – https://youtu.be/vt1Pwfnh5pc
  • Jesus Was an Only Son by Bruce Springsteen – https://youtu.be/Qelew5_k90E
  • Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley – https://youtu.be/y8AWFf7EAc4

Just some good time to sit back, close my eyes and chill.

How can I not appreciate moments like this?

Thanks!!!

Day 70 – Thankful for Everyone Who Brought Color to My Life Today

Today has been a pretty awesome day so far.  The day has gone so well that I was struggling to find a way to include all that I am thankful for, but I think I found it…

It started off with an early morning drive up to Eau Claire through some impossibly huge snowflakes.  On a whim I turned right instead of going straight and took the path less traveled.  It paid off in spades for me.

Just a short distance south of Whitehall I saw a sight that caused me to jam on the brakes, turn around, and find a place to park the car.  Watching for traffic I quickly went into the road and was able to snap a pic of what captured my attention…  I swear, there are no edits or special effects done to capture this picture.

fullsizerender-16

The flowers were a memorial to someone and they immediately brought to mind my friend Larry and his family, who are suffering through a horrific tragedy.  As I thought about Larry I couldn’t help but remember times I’ve spent with him in different Chamber events and whatnot.  He is always quick to smile, take his time to consider things before speaking, and always reminds me of a younger version of one of my grandpas.  He always went out of his way to help me feel comfortable in room and I always smiled when seeing him in a meeting I went into.  In thinking about Larry I smiled and realized that in a week or so I need to take him out for coffee and re-connect.

While driving I got a phone call from Nicole, one of my team members in Rice Lake.  She is spunky, motivated and has a super high and positive energy that just exudes from her voice first thing in the morning.  When talking with her I could just hear the pride and passion she has for what she does, and as always, the phone call ended with a big smile on my face.  Later in the day she called again and joked about how I must hate getting calls from her, but in actuality I really appreciate them.  Her enthusiasm always helps get me more fired up.

While in the Eau Claire office I had my first peer coaching call with Jason from Nashville.  Talk about someone with high energy and drive – wow!!!  Our 40 minute call was incredibly helpful and I was left in awe of how efficiently and effectively he handled the call.  We were able to set the stage of where we both want to develop to within the next year, discuss our areas for improvement, discuss how to help hold each other accountable, and learn a lot about our long term goals and our families.  It was an incredibly uplifting call that had me psyched!

Shortly after the call Katie from our Eau Claire office came in to the office I was in and was just beaming with happiness and pride.  She explained that they had several new clients starting and how much she was loving a slight twist on her position.  Her smile was contagious and I left the conversation feeling very positive, optimistic, and proud.

Over lunch I was able to spend time with Lee and Carolyn, the managers of Eau Claire and Menomonie and Beth, my regional developer.  The conversation focused on our goals for 2017, some of the personal goals and dreams we had and what was needed to get on track to reach them.  It was upbeat, optimistic, positive, and yet grounded in knowing that we have a lot of hard work to get there.  Carolyn and Lee both made me smile and feel a sense of pride in seeing how much they’ve grown over the past year or so and how ready they are to do great things in 2017 and beyond.

To close up the work day (in the office at least) I spent some one on one time with Beth.  I am incredibly thankful and appreciative to have someone who has a great balance of pushing, asking tough questions, all while motivating, and supporting me.  She’s always in a good mood and her positive energy always leaves me feeling re-charged and ready to take on the world.  Spending time with her always puts more color in my day.

As I headed home I hopped on the phone with Becky for a while and joked around with her.  Regardless of how trivial the conversation I am always happy to talk with her as I start to head home from a day of work.  It is a reminder of why I push as hard as I do – for us to be able to do more together.

My dad and I caught up on what we hadn’t talked about over the past week and covered topics like work, retirement, snow plowing, and parental karma (almost last night’s topic, it’s a long, but funny story for another day).  While we didn’t solve any of the world’s problems, we enjoyed each other’s company.

While the boys and Becky are all at log rolling I know that they will be amongst the last ones to bring color to my day when they get home.  While they aren’t quite as happy to see me when they get home as the dogs are, giving them big hugs when they get home always bring me joy and help me feel at home.  I already know the answers to the questions I’ll ask them (How did log rolling go? – Good.  What was new at school today? – Nothing) I’ll still be happy to ask them and press them for better answers before tucking them in to bed at night.

Today was an awesome day and it was made more awesome by the people I interacted with.  I started with taking a different way on a whim and ended up finding the photo that put this all together.  Especially during winter and the holidays I have the choice to see the world as I would like to.  I can choose to see the bland white, the dreary gray, the dark black…  or I can choose to see the color.  I can focus on those things that bring the beauty and happiness in spite of, and sometimes because of the appreciation of, the whites, grays, and blacks.  Thank you to everyone who helps to bring color to my life!

Thanks!!!

Day 69 – Thankful for a Successful Concert

Day 69 – Thankful for a Successful Concert

Tonight was Dominic’s first middle school orchestra concert.  It went very well and he seemed to be having a great time while he was playing.  All the practicing he does seems like it is paying off and he really enjoys it.  It probably doesn’t hurt that his friend Luke plays right along next to him and that there’s about a 4-1 girl to boy ratio.  Either way he seemed to have fun!

Way to kick butt and play well Bud!  Your mom and I had a lot of fun listening tonight…  And Gavin was thankful for the opportunity to hang out with his buddy Lance 🙂

Thanks!!!

Day 68 – Thankful for Getting Our Christmas Tree

Day 68 – Thankful for Getting Our Christmas Tree

I have to admit that when I first looked outside this morning my first thought was “oh great, Mother Nature threw up in our yard.”  Seeing the layer of white stuff was not what I wanted to see right away.

Fortunately for me and my attitude we had decided to get our Christmas tree today.  For the past several years we’ve gone to a tree farm in Mindoro to cut down our tree.  In past years we’ve had everything from no snow to piles of snow, nice and warm down to bitterly cold and freezing.  This was the first time that we happened to get our tree during the first snowfall of the year.  It was incredible to meld two awesome moments into one day!

fullsizerender-14fullsizerender-10fullsizerender-12fullsizerender-11fullsizerender-13img_3282img_3283

Between much debate over which tree was best, snowball fights, letting the boys help cut down the tree for the first time, more snowball fights, the smell of fresh cut pine, and more snowball fights, it was a pretty awesome time.

As an added little bonus the Campbell Fire Department was helping Santa out today and was pulling his sled throughout the neighborhood today.  Gavin was pretty jacked for this and pretty much jumped out of his skin when he saw the firetrucks coming down our street.

img_5027

After forgetting to say “thank you” to Santa, Gavin turned back and ran over to the sled.  “Thanks for being an awesome man!” was how Gavin expressed his gratitude, and it put a huge smile on my face.

While the rest of the day included many other Christmas related things (like watching Elf), getting our tree in the first snow of the year with my family was definitely one of the biggest highlights.

Thanks!!!
