Day 284 – Thankful for Learning New Lessons and Being Able to Share Lessons that Others Have Shared with Me

Today was a great day, one filled with many positives that I am thankful for.  When I paused to think about what to write about tonight there were a handful of conversations that have really made my day special.

There were times in which I was able to learn from my teammates, colleagues and clients.  New work ideas, life insights, and a little bit of everything in between were tossed in my direction and it was great soaking them up.

Intermixed with these new lessons learned I was able to pay honor to those who’ve helped me grow…  I had the opportunity to help share some of the lessons others have taught me.

It was great to learn some new things to share with others later, and to share lessons with others that I’m pretty sure they will share with others.  Funny how the nurse trees keep popping into my mind so often lately. 🙂

Thanks!!!

Day 283 – Thankful for Becky Putting Up with My Musical Choices During Our Run

When we run I always keep my phone in my hand, it’s nice knowing that the boys can call anytime.  While we usually talk when we run there are some runs in which I just need a little bit of tunes to keep me going.  Other times there’s a song stuck in my head or another that just feels right and I need to hear it.

Becky’s preference is either quiet or talking so I usually respect that and keep the iTunes off.  Tomorrow morning I just didn’t feel right.  I was tired, dragging, hot, and struggling with the humidity.  I just wanted to quit.

As we paused for a DDB (dog deucer break) I thought of a friend of ours who listened to a specific song last night while running.  She and I have something in common, we’ve both recently lost our dad’s.  What was the song she listened to?  The Nights by Avicii.  I followed her lead, blasted it as loud as my little phone would play, told Becky why it was on, and we were off!

After that we moved into Wake Me Up and Broken Arrows by Avicii and then moved into another couple of songs that just felt right, Dreams and Right Now by Val Halen.

As we got to the end I felt the need to sprint and give everything I had in the tank.  As I traded LuLu for Skywalker Becky smiled and let me take off.  Once again I played The Nights and I was off at almost full speed.

The song was wrapping up as I turned the corner, totally gasping for breath.  The music helped power me through what had been a rough run and it felt great.

There’ve been other days when I’ve been thankful for music while running or a specific song, but today I realized that I was most grateful for Becky being totally okay with me playing music, running without talking much, and taking off in a sprint at the end.  It was as if she could tell that it was what I needed, what my soul needed, and she smiled and let it happen even though it’s not her preference.  That was pretty awesome of her and I greatly appreciate it!

Becky, thanks for letting me blast my music and run like an idiot, I needed it in a bad way this morning.  Love you!

Thanks!!!

Day 282 – Thankful for a Random Video of Dad

Day 282 – Thankful for a Random Video of Dad

There’ve been a handful of things that I’m thankful for today.  Some of the highlights included the boys working on their dream lists (Gavin wants to school at the University of Michigan for Nuclear Chemistry and Dominic wants to go backpacking in Olympic National Park), both of their dream lists including a ton of travel, and joking with friends and family.  I even started writing today’s blog about eating a meal at home (a rarity over the past few months), but something stopped me…

When I got to work this morning I fired up my computer and due to plugging it into the monitors everything on the desktop shifted from its normal position.  In the shifting icons I found one that was out of place in the middle of my screen…  a video of my dad.  I smiled and hit play.  Here it is:

Watching the video and seeing the smile on Dad’s face left a huge grin on my face and warmed my heart.  It was an awesome start to the day.

As I started typing up the blog for today about the meal at home I was looking for a file and minimized my screen.  There in front of my eyes was this video again.  I played it for the boys and they giggled just like they did on the screen.  It was an awesome end to the day.

While I usually keep a relatively tidy desktop I’m going to leave this video for a while.  Whenever I need a smile I can double click and feel better.

Thanks!!!

Day 281 – Thankful for Wrapping Up Vacation

Over the past few vacations I’ve spent at least part of the way home putting together our pictures from the vacation.  Today I’m doing the same as Becky finishes driving the last leg.  Every time I go through our vacation pictures I laugh at just how much we did and how it seems like an eternity ago even though it was less than a couple of weeks ago.

I went through the pictures and picked one from each day that made me smile big and reminded me of what we did that day.

Day 280 – Thankful for Remembering that Awesome Things Often Live Past the Point of Fear

Day 280 – Thankful for Remembering that Awesome Things Often Live Past the Point of Fear

Today’s gratitude post was pretty much by accident.  We decided to take the gondolas up to the mountain top to get a new perspective.  As we started the ride seemed pretty sweet, nothing that would bring any adrenaline…

IMG_0155

From there we were rewarded with a sweet view and a chance to have our picture taken with the Olympic rings from the downhill skiing competition.

IMG_0156

As we surveyed the environment we noticed that by taking a chairlift we could get up to the summit of the peak we were on.  No big thing, right?  Hop on a chairlift and off we go!  That’s what we thought anyways…

IMG_0179

As we started it was nothing but smiles…

IMG_0161

But then I realized what a crazy high climb with no seat belt or harness felt like…  especially with an 8yo next to me that never stops moving.  I have a mild fear of heights that hit me hard.  Wanting to panic but knowing that there was nothing that I could do about it I kept breathing and did everything I could to calm down.  The adrenaline was pumping and I did everything I could to not freak out as we finished with a 100′ vertical ascent at the end.  It was wild!

Once it was all said and down I was glad that I did it.  The views I can remember now that I’m not facing the dizzying heights were breath taking.  The top of the mountain was astounding, we were just chilling in the clouds!

As we hiked down there were 20′ tall snow walls…

Overall, it was an incredible experience that I’m glad to have had.  Almost more importantly, it reminded me that often times there are some incredible things waiting for me when I go past the point of my fear.

Thanks!!!

Day 279 – Thankful for the Surreal Moments of Life – Olympics Edition

Day 279 – Thankful for the Surreal Moments of Life – Olympics Edition

Today we took the boys out of the country for the day and are chillin’ on our patio in Whistler, BC tonight…

For many reasons today seemed totally surreal.  We drove across the border without a single political joke from Gavin to the Canadian Border Patrol person.  North of Vancouver we had a spectacular view of snow capped mountains and the brilliant green Strait of Georgia.  Many new things to see, many things that just didn’t seem real.

That said, the only thing that seemed even more surreal was our touring of a few Olympic sites.  Whistler hosted the nordic events (skiing, ski jumping, and biathlon) as well as the sled related sports (luge, bobsled, and skeleton) and had an Olympic Village.  We spent some time at each location and it was AMAZING!!!

While the biathlon isn’t something I would watch it was so cool to see where they shot…

From there we went to the Whistler Sliding Center and were able to see and touch various relics of the sled based games including bobsleds, uniforms, shoes, and so on.  I was even able to hold one of the Olympic torches!  It was wild!!!

The Olympic Village was also just totally not real…

IMG_0145

The other part of it that just made me smile was hearing the boys talk about how badly they wanted to try the bobsled (have to be 13) and how Gavin wants to go to Luge Camp and Dominic wants to try Skeleton.  Who knows, maybe this crazy dose of surreality lit an olympic sized dream for them?

Thanks!!!

Day 278 – Thankful for #22 of 59 National Parks

Today was the last day of exploring new National Parks for us, tomorrow we head up to Canada to get the boys out of the country for the first time in their lives.  The National Park we visited today was North Cascades, and it was pretty awesome.

There was a lot less hiking than what we’re used to, but the views were spectacular.  At times it felt like we were in the Canadian Rockies near Yoho.

The waterfalls were incredible, the mountains gorgeous, and the lakes an unbelievable shade of green from the glacial run off.  It was awesome!

So now we’ve checked off 22 of the 59 National Parks and I’m pumped to check off the remaining 37 over the next several years!

Day 277 – Thankful for Getting Lucky 😉

Day 277 – Thankful for Getting Lucky 😉

Man did we get lucky today!  The part of Mount Rainier National Park that we planned on going to today just opened this morning.  What are the odds that it opened up in the day we wanted to go, and we had no idea that was the case???

Wait a minute…  what did you think I meant by the title of today?  Get your mind out of the gutter! 😂

Taking in the sights of Mount Rainier from a spot that literally just opened today is just the start of the luck I’m talking about today.

As I type this we’re chilling at the pool in our hotel, the boys are splashing around and Becky’s reading a book for fun.

How lucky am I to have a great family, great boys, an awesome wife, and have the ability to go on vacation with them?  How lucky am I to have already checked 21 National Parks off of the list of 59 with another to be covered tomorrow?  How lucky am I to have a best friend and wife who loves the outdoors as much or more than I do?  How lucky are we to have a couple of boys who love hiking, exploring, and picking up bugs (& letting them crawl up their arms)?

How lucky am I to have parents who helped me understand just how awesome vacations can be and get me hooked at an early age?  How lucky am I to have had an early experience in the mountains that has endured and grown each passing year?  How lucky am I to have parents and in laws who love me?

The road opening today was just the start of getting lucky today.  Once that uncorked it’s been a steady flow of observations of things that I’m lucky to have.

Thanks!!!

Day 276 – Thankful for Nurse Trees and a Random Trail Sign with Deep Meaning

While hiking in mount Rainier National Park this morning we hiked through another grove of ancient trees.  As we wandered in wonder of these huge sentinels we came across several “nurse logs,” the once giant trees fallen by the elements that has begun to decompose and has become a place for new trees to grow.  They’re beautiful in a few different ways, mainly in the beauty of nature and in the beauty of giving of itself even at its end.

We’ve seen many examples of these trees on this trip, the one above is a perfect example.  As its last gift to the world it provides a source of nutrition and safety, it gives new trees a place to grow.  There’s something about seeing them that just seems right, and I smile as I see them.

A little while later we happened past a sign that was explaining the way that nurse trees work and then included a quote by Edwin Way Teale.  As I read it I couldn’t help but think of my dad…

“For a great tree death comes as a gradual transformation. Its vitality ebbs slowly. Even when life has abandoned it entirely it remains a majestic thing. On some hilltop a dead tree may dominate the landscape for miles around. Alone among living things it retains its character and dignity after death. Plans wither; animals disintegrates. But a dead tree may be as arresting, as filled with personality, in death as it is in life. Even in its final moments, when the massive trunk lies prone and it has moldering into a ridge covered with mosses and fungi, it arrives at a fitting and noble end. It enriches and refreshes the earth. And later, as part of other green and growing things, it rises again.”

My thoughts immediately went to the memory of Dad.  In the past weeks his personality and smile have dominated my landscape.  He’s retained his character and dignity after death and I’m more aware of it now than ever.  Even though he’s gone he’s continued to enrich so many lives.  Many of his friends and families have done things to put smiles on the faces of strangers, have helped others, and done things they normally may not have, inspired by Dad.  He’s now risen to heaven and continues to live in us forever.

Just as the nurse tree Dad continues to provide a source of growth and food for my soul.  He raised me, helped instill his values in me, provided me with safety, and has continued to help me grow even through his death.

Dad, I love you dude!  I’ve been thinking about you often on this trip, wondering if you’ve seen these places before, and smiling knowing that you’re seeing them with me now.  Talking with you has put a smile on my face, I know you’re smiling too!

Thanks!!!

Day 275 – Thankful for the Raw Power of Nature

Day 275 – Thankful for the Raw Power of Nature

On our tour of awesome things in Washington today we stopped at Mount Saint Helens.  As we were planning our trip Becky mentioned that we should probably stop there to see it.  We both kind of shrugged, thinking it would be a little bit of a history lesson along with a pretty mountain view.  What we saw today was way more than that!

IMG_9730

In learning more about the eruption we were all in awe of the awesome and amazing raw power of nature.  In a short period of time the mountain bulged under the rising pressure and finally exploded in an explosion that was nothing short of mind blowing.  In seconds an entire mountain was transformed, lakes moved, forests obliterated, and valleys filled.

Catastrophism

The pressure created a blast that hit the forest at a speed of 500+ miles per hour, six miles away!  It was nothing short of incredible!  As we went on a nice 8+ mile hike we were able to see many views of the devastation, the new landscapes, the remnants of the old.  It was amazing!

IMG_9769

For a day that was at first just a shrug and “okay,” it was a pretty amazing day.  It really helped me appreciate the raw power of nature.

Thanks!!!
