Day 312 – Thankful for Cards Against Humanity

Many times when I blog it’s about something more serious.  A deep insight, a strong friendship, an awesome experience, or something memorable.  Tonight is both none of those and all of those at once!

Becky and I just got home from hanging out with some great friends of our’s, a night that saw much Cards Against Humanity played.  If you don’t know the game, don’t fret!  You’re probably a better person than me! 🙂

An excellent time was had by all.  We learned new insights about each other, built stronger friendships, had an awesome experience, and created many memories…  many of which are mildly inappropriate!  To protect the not-so-innocent I’ve not tagged them on this post…

Thanks to Cards Against Humanity for making tonight even more awesome than it would normally have been!

Thanks!!!

Day 311 – Thankful for the Reason Behind My Beard

Over the past month and a half my beard has continued to grow and I notice it often.  Many times it is a little itchy, sometimes it tickles my nose.  I catch myself rubbing it, twisting it, and tugging at it from time to time.  In each of those moments when my conscious thought catches up with my subconscious reactions I pause.  When I pause I sometimes smile…  sometimes I cringe…  Each time there are two thoughts that pop into my head.

The last time I completely shaved my face was the morning of Dad’s funeral.  A few days after that I made the decision to keep the beard as a reminder of a promise that I made to myself.   My dad was never big on beards (I’m pretty sure it was because he couldn’t grow one!), this facial hair is not symbolic of him.

From the time that Dad was dying to the day of his funeral to many times since I’ve gotten a lot of feedback about my blog.  There’ve been many people who said that it helped them express their own feelings, it showed them that others felt the same, it brought them back wonderful memories, and it helped them through the process of grieving.  All of this from something that I’ve been writing selfishly to help myself be more happy in life, for sharing emotions, thoughts, and memories that have helped me deal with the loss of my dad.

At some point around the funeral I heard the call of what I needed to do.  I’ve started writing a book about losing my dad, some of the life lessons that he shared with me, and some of our most important values that I want to share with my boys.  My dad helped me learn to deal with his death by the way he dealt with his dad’s death.  He taught me his way, it is up to me to help teach my boys his way.  Whether or not this book ever turns into something for the public or remains something in the libraries of my boys, it is something that I must write…  Both for my boys and for me.

When I pause and am aware of my beard, there are two thoughts that pop into my head.  The first is a vision of my dad smiling at me, the smile is a cross of his proud smile and the smile of him giving me a hard time.  The second thought is a question to myself…  “Have I made progress on my book lately?”  When I have been working on it, physically or mentally, I smile.  When I’ve decided to waste my time on things, like social media or TV, I cringe.

And therein lies the reason for my beard.  I will not shave it off until I’m at least halfway done with my book (or longer).  Every single time I look in the mirror I’m reminded that I am choosing how to spend my minutes.  I can’t run from it, it’s right there in front of me.  And that’s why I’m thankful for reason behind my beard today…  It is a constant reminder of what I must accomplish, my decision to use my time on this earth for the right things, and it reminds me of Dad.

Thanks!!!

Day 310 – Thankful for Blowing Off Steam with My Boys

Sometimes you’ve just got to blow off some steam, and sometimes that means that some empty cans have to pay the price!

Deciding that we needed to do something fun after supper tonight the boys and I busted out our paintball guns and had an awesome time shooting at empty cans (and occasionally each other’s feet).  There were long distance shots, trick shots, and even a little bit of can trap shooting!

We even had fun washing all the paint off the garage…  and possibly spraying each other a little bit!

After a day of adulting it was kind of nice enjoying the simple pleasures of life…  like shooting stuff with the boys to blow off some steam.

Thanks!!!

Day 309 – Thankful for Chillaxin’ at Home to Recover from an Awesome Trip

I’m usually a fan of keeping very busy.  Whether it’s in my shop, working on a project in the house, or anything else that keeps me moving there aren’t many times in which I’m content just sitting around doing nothing.  Even when I’m on the phone I’m usually pacing.  Tonight is an exception to the norm…

The breakneck pace of the past week and change has finally caught up with all of us.  The boys and I are chillaxing on the couch watching Doctor Strange, and it’s just what the doctor ordered (pun totally intended)!  Once the movie is done it’ll pretty much be bed for all three of us.  10+ hours of sleep sounds pretty awesome!

I don’t like feeling like a slouch, but in a time like this I know it’s because we’ve had so much fun that we’ve completely worn ourselves out…  and for that I’m thankful!

Thanks!!!

Day 308 – Thankful for Old Vacation Pictures

As I think about it, there may have already been one day in which I’ve been thankful for this.  Regardless, I really don’t care about the rules as old vacation pictures really are just that awesome!

As I’ve been getting my pictures cleaned up from this latest adventure I’ve started spending a little time going through my old pictures to make sure that I’ve got all the oldies but goodies saved and ready for future viewing.  In going through these old pictures my brain is flooded with memories of vacations gone by.  Some alone, some with just Becky, others with family, and yet others with friends.  Each old album freshens up some great memories and they all put smiles on my face!

Today I’m thankful for the huge number of smiles that going through these old pictures have brought forth.  I can’t imagine a better way to chill and enjoy a quiet night at home.

Thanks!!!

Day 307 – Thankful for a Short Road Trip the Boys Won’t Forget

Day 307 – Thankful for a Short Road Trip the Boys Won’t Forget

Over the past 93 hours we’ve driven 2,615 miles, hiked approximately 21 miles, gone up over a mile of incline, and had a blast doing it.  In one 33 hour stretch we were either hiking or in the car almost the entire time, the only exceptions being for bathroom breaks!

In that time period we each pushed ourselves beyond our current limits, achieved goals and dreams, strengthened friendships, learned new skills, and created so many memories that we’ll never forget.

It was a whirlwind of awesomeness that none of us will ever forget.  My gut feel is that this will inspire many future long weekends of excellent experiences.  We now know that we can disappear for a handful of days, run ourselves to the point of exhaustion, and enjoy every single minute of it!

Even now while I’m now exhausted, stiff, and sore, there is no question that this was exactly what the doctor ordered…  A road trip that the boys (Dominic & Gavin AND Steve & I) will never forget.

Thanks!!!

Day 305 – Thankful for Taking a Wrong Turn

Sometimes the coolest experiences in life come as the result of a mistake.  That was the case for us today.  On our way to our hike we ended up missing our turn and didn’t realize it until almost an hour later.

Once we realized what had happened we had two choices.  Go back from where we came, or take the road less travelled.  Never ones to conform we took the latter and never stressed for a second.

After a short time going on a normal highway we took our new route, the one that involved gravel, almost no traffic, a lack of shoulders, steep drops, and awesome views.

It may not have been the way we initially planned, but it turned out pretty sweet!  By the time it was all said and done we made it to our destination and enjoyed an incredible end of our hike.

Sometimes we don’t end up going the way we’ve planned.  Sometimes we make a mistake and go the wrong way.  The cool thing is that once we realize it we can correct and get back to where we meant to go.  Even cooler is the fact that if we stay open minded we might end up taking an even more fantastic route than what we’d imagined.  I’m very thankful for that today!

Thanks!!!

Day 304 – Thankful for Helping the Boys Earn the First “Man Scouts” Merit Badges

At Scout Camp this week one of the counsellors, another dad, and I all put our heads together and were working on putting together the framework for a new version of Scouting for adults…  Man Scouts!  In this new endeavor instead of working towards our Eagle we work towards our Geezer badge.  To get there we have to earn many merit badges including Comic Book Collecting, Chainsaw Juggling, Blindfolded Lion Taming, Scotch, and many other wonderful things that us old dudes like to do.  Tonight Steve and I helped the boys start to earn their own merit badges before adulthood…  Poker and Survival Kits.

Poker consisted of watching the World Series of Poker Final Table and walking them through the percentages, strategies, and so on.

Still not sure why Dominic wasn’t smiling, I’m guessing it was because we interrupted his poker watching. 🙂

Survival Kits was taught by Steve as he walked the boys through their new survival kits designed specifically by Steve for the boys!

Knowing that they’re already earning their way to their first Man Scouts Merit Badges makes me smile.  Who cares if the badges are real or not, it was a great time helping them learn some new skills.  For that I’m thankful!

Thanks!!!

Day 303 – Thankful for an Incredible Moment of Serenity Spanning Four Generations at Scout Camp

Day 303 – Thankful for an Incredible Moment of Serenity Spanning Four Generations at Scout Camp

Isn’t it funny how life sometimes lines everything up just right for us to see?  Those moments when The Big Guy Upstairs makes it so easy that we can’t help but trip on what He’s trying to show us.  Much of Scout Camp led to one moment that touched me so deeply that I was moved to happy tears.

The day that Gavin made his comment about me always being his buddy was one of the best days of being a dad that I’ve ever had.  In addition to the comment it was an amazing day that I’ll hold precious for all of my life.  We had so much fun, the three of us, it was fantastic father son time.  In between the comment and kayaking there were many other things we did together that led to that moment I’ll hold in my heart.

In the afternoon we went to the handicraft area to work on Gavin’s viking ship.  While he was doing that Dominic decided to do some leather stamping.  I’d had an idea earlier so I had brought along the leather knife belt sheath kit I’d picked up earlier in the day.  Once Dominic was done I asked him to put a particular design on my case to remind me of this trip.  He smiled from ear to ear and was happy to do it.  Once completed he asked me if I’d like to have him do more to decorate it and I told him to do whatever he felt was appropriate.  For me the most important part was already there…  an intermingling of our three sets of initials and the year.

After Gavin had finished his ship he wanted to leather stamp his knife case, but the instructor said that only Boy Scouts who’d completed the Leatherwork merit badge could use the equipment.  Understanding the reasons Gavin asked Dominic to decorate it for him.  I then spent the next fifteen minutes watching Dominic work the leather under the instruction of Gavin.  They shared ideas, worked as a team, and ended up with an incredible piece of work.  As Gavin told Dominic, “you made it look even better than the picture on the box!”  Sitting back and seeing he two of them work together left me smiling.

After that we went to camp, met as a den, went to dinner, and then got ready for the pool party.  Not wanting to miss it, but knowing that the boys didn’t need Dad right with them I brought my unfinished knife sheath to the poolside and proceeded to put it together as I sat in a chair watching he boys and smiling at the sound of their laughter.  While putting it together I bought of Dad a lot.  I remembered my experiences at camp with him, I thought of him showing the boys how to do wood burning, and remembered stories of him doing crafts when he was younger.  As I ran the needle and thread through the stamped leather I kept thinking of him smiling as he watched me (both his smile of pride and his smile of “you dumbass” as I screwed up a simple part because I wasn’t paying attention!).

As I was working on it I had to cut the string to size.  What tool did I use?  The only one that felt appropriate, the Boy Scout knife I’d received from Grandpa Kreiling many years ago (I blogged about it last year).  Something about using it and thinking of Grandpa just felt right as I finished up I was listening to the boys have fun and felt the immense pride of being their dad.

And that’s when the moment hit me.  I looked down as I slid the knife from Grandpa into the finished project created by my boys and I as I thought of my dad…  I saw the finished project, I saw my boys playing, and I saw Dad and Grandpa together and smiling with pride standing next to me.   I saw that all, and I cried tears of happiness.

Thanks!!!
