Day 1,178 – Thankful for an Entertaining and Enlightening Sortabiography and Always Look at the Bright Side of Life

What’s the song you listen to when you need a smile? Which song are you happy to have stuck on replay in your head?

I’m in the autobiography cycle of my reading queue (business/non-fiction, autobiography/biography, fiction) and I stumbled into a great one! Before our flight left Sydney I took a quick run through the book store and took pics of all the books that looked interesting. One that caught my eye immediately was Always Look On the Bright Side of Life (A Sortabiography) by Eric Idle. I was even more excited to find the book was read by the author on Audible.

As a Monty Python fan it seemed like a great option. What also interested me was how little I knew of him and the mix of his age and nationality. Having been a small child in England in WWII added an interesting bit of history that’s fascinated me. Several books I’ve read recently have referenced WWII and I was curious to see how that impacted his life.

The book itself was amazing! I had no idea all that he’d accomplished. What also stood out was an excellent mix of self deprecating humor and wonderful life lessons. The entire way through I was often laughing, almost always smiling, and usually learning.

Another thing I appreciated greatly was how it reminded me of the song Always Look On the Bright Side of Life from Life of Brian and Spamalot. A quick listen to that song and I can help but shrug off seemingly any amount of stress. Try it – play this link whenever you’re in the dumps https://youtu.be/X_-q9xeOgG4 . You’ll be whistling along in no time!

Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say.
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle,
Don’t grumble, give a whistle!
And this’ll help things turn out for the best

And

Always look on the bright side of life!
Always look on the bright side of life

If life seems jolly rotten,
There’s something you’ve forgotten!
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing,
When you’re feeling in the dumps,
Don’t be silly chumps,
Just purse your lips and whistle — that’s the thing!
And always look on the bright side of life
Come on!

Always look on the bright side of life

For life is quite absurd,
And death’s the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin — give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it, it’s the last chance anyhow!

So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you draw your terminal breath.

Life’s a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true,
You’ll see it’s all a show,
Keep ’em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

And always look on the bright side of life

Always look on the bright side of life

Come on guys, cheer up

Always look on the bright side of life

Always look on the bright side of life

Worse things happen at sea you know

Always look on the bright side of life

I mean, what have you got to lose?
you know, you come from nothing
you’re going back to nothing
what have you lost? Nothing!

Always look on the bright side of life

Thanks!!!
